What the (2 week) Wedding Countdown has taught me

A wedding unless you are in the Game of Thrones, is one of the most momentous occasions for a family. For us it was certainly no different. As some of you DoGooders may know, I recently became engaged on Valentine's Day. It was an easy decision for me and to anyone who knows my soon-to-be wife. That being said, I have learned a ton about life in the process.

The good news is that we have just two weeks left to go. If you are doing the math in your head, you are correct in that it has only been 4 months. We just didn't feel the need to prolong the inevitable. There in lies lesson number 1.

1) COMMUNICATION: In life, work or play, we have needed to be on the same page about every aspect of our lives. This is certainly not a skill I inherited but have learned over time it's value. You know you have really gotten the hang of it when nothing needs to be said at all. Either that or she has mastered the Jedi mind trick. I'll leave that to you to decide.

2) FAMILY: I suppose I never realized how important the family you are marrying into could be. They have to believe in your values, you certainly have to get a long and you take them for better or worse. I feel lucky to have come from where I came and look forward to including others.

3) BAGGAGE: Yes, we all have it. Some is more visible than others. You may have heard about my son Chris, the impetus for starting DoGoodBuyUs. Well, Chris and my soon-to-be wife are not related. This causes some controversy from time to time but has also enriched our lives. Where would I be without them??

4) GET OUT OF THE WAY: This one I wish I had learned earlier on. Allow me to practice. Yes. Yup. That sounds great. I really like X, Y or Z. That was therapeutic, wasn't it?

5) HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR: One of the traits I love most about Rachel. There are times to take life seriously and many more times where we should let things go. For an example I can send her baby pictures :)

I am sure I have much more to learn. SHARE your thoughts below!
